Performance and reliability of generative AI–enabled radiograph reporting

Reporting has become a central theme in discussions on radiology workflow and AI adoption. Evidence from Northwestern University suggests that generative AI can ease the reporting burden, saving time without sacrificing clinical precision. A study from Northwestern University demonstrates that a generative AI model able to provide draft reports for plain radiographs across a tertiary health care system can improve efficiency without loss of quality. Across nearly 12,000 AI-draft-assisted interpretations, documentation time dropped by 15.5%, about 30 seconds saved per report. Peer review found no difference in clinical accuracy or textual quality compared to reports created without AI.

The AI also helped flag unexpected, clinically significant pneumothoraxes with high specificity and moderate sensitivity, offering a potential tool to speed up identification of urgent cases. For radiology departments facing high demand, documentation load, and turnaround pressures, the study suggests that AI-assisted reporting could ease burdens and support better patient care if implemented thoughtfully.
