Computer-Aided Analysis of Photographed Chest X-Ray Films Performs Well Compared With Trained Radiologists
Mayo Clinic Proceedings: Digital Health, 2026
Abstract
Introduction: This study evaluates the performance of computer-aided analysis systems for chest X-ray interpretation.
Methods: The research compared AI-based analysis of photographed chest X-ray films against assessments by trained radiologists.
Results: The computer-aided analysis system demonstrated comparable performance to trained radiologists across multiple diagnostic categories including tuberculosis, COVID-19, consolidation, fibrosis, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and other chest abnormalities.
Conclusion: AI-assisted analysis shows promising results for chest X-ray interpretation, potentially supporting radiologists in clinical practice and expanding diagnostic capabilities.
